COURSE OVERVIEW

This two and a half day course will explore important advances in respiratory imaging, which have led to the discovery of new small animal respiratory diseases in recent years.  Moreover, lung ultrasound is fast becoming a first line screening test as well as an ancillary test for pulmonary imaging. Internists will be equipped to interpret multiple imaging modalities of the respiratory tract including fluoroscopy, thoracic computed tomography (CT), endoscopy and ultrasound.  These modalities allow for integration of imaging findings with clinicopathologic findings to better direct diagnostic testing and a more accurate working diagnosis. Furthermore, lung ultrasound provides another option as a monitoring tool that is rapid and point-of-care.

During the course, the differential list of canine and feline respiratory disorders will be expanded to include aspiration-related respiratory syndromes, interstitial lung diseases, bronchiolar disorders and primary pulmonary vascular diseases. Lectures and small group discussions will utilize case-based examples to provide a foundation for interpretation of advanced imaging modalities relevant to respiratory disorders. A 3.5 hour interactive lab will also provide internists with hands-on practice using Vet BLUE (bedside lung ultrasound) and TFAST.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Acquire knowledge of normal and abnormal image findings that will guide subsequent diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • Competently interpret an expanded differential list of canine and feline respiratory disorders.
  • Gain experience using Vet BLUE and TFAST.
