COURSE OVERVIEW

This three-day course consists of short presentations interspersed with hands-on laboratories in which participants learn a wide variety of neurosurgical approaches and techniques. Specific procedures include rostral and caudal fossa craniotomies, ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, spinal stabilization with multiple types of implant systems, 3D-printing, operating magnification and lumbosacral decompression. Spinal stabilization principles and biomechanics will be reviewed.

The goal of this course is to provide attendees the opportunity to practice neurosurgical techniques not routinely encountered under the guidance of expert neurosurgeons while sharing experiences with other participants.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1.  Obtain working knowledge of the various approaches to the brain and spine, including an understanding of regional anatomy and specific tips and techniques

2. Become familiar with the indications and potential complications of specific neurosurgical procedures

3. Gain experience using neurosurgical instruments including drills, plates, pins, polyaxial screws, exoscopes and ventriculoperitoneal shunts

Key Differentiators:

1. Completion of this course fulfills one of the requirements for the ACVIM Certificate of Neurosurgery Training

2. Instructors are experienced veterinary neurosurgeons and include Diplomates of ACVIM (Neurology) and ACVS

RACE Application Status:
This program will be submitted (but is not yet approved) for 25.5 hours of live, seminar/lecture and lab medical continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE-approval.
