Course Overview:

The North American Neuroscience Course (Brain Camp), now assimilated into the ACVIM ACE program, will provide participants with advanced instruction in veterinary neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, electrodiagnosis, neuropathology, small and large animal neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology.  The course is intended to provide a foundation in these areas for those interested in both clinical and research applications.

Brain Camp consists of 3 separate modules:

  1. Advanced Diagnostic Imaging, July 30-31, 2022 – Held the weekend prior to the Neuroscience module, this 2-day module is a comprehensive review of magnetic resonance imaging and other advanced imaging modalities used to evaluate the nervous system in veterinary patients. It is recommended the MR physics be reviewed prior to the module. Lectures from this in-person offering will be captured and offered on demand, after the live course.
  2. Advanced Veterinary Neuroscience, Week 1: August 1-5, 2022, Week 2: August 8-12, 2022 – The primary module of Brain Camp, this 10-day module provides a foundation in a variety of veterinary neuroscience topics for those interested in both clinical and research areas. Lecture sessions incorporate a variety of teaching methods; including didactic and interactive. Lectures from this in-person offering will be captured and offered on demand, after the live course.
  3. Advanced Veterinary Neurosurgery, August 13-14, 2022 – Held the weekend after the conclusion of the Neuroscience module, this 2-day module provides an opportunity for residents to practice advanced neurosurgical techniques under the guidance of expert neurosurgeons. This course utilizes short cases and conceptual presentations followed by hands-on skills labs on the most commonly used neurosurgical techniques. This module is limited to residents, only. For Diplomates interested in this module, the Advanced Techniques in Neurosurgery ACE course will be open to Diplomates and registration is anticipated to open on June 13.

This 2-day module is an intense review of advanced neuroimaging, primarily focusing on magnetic resonance imaging.  Computed tomography and clinical cases are incorporated into the module.  Important points of physics and disease syndromes will be emphasized.

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand basic and advanced MRI sequences, artifacts, and how to correct them
  • Have a basic understanding of MRI of common intracranial pathologies
  • Have a basic understanding of MRI of common spinal pathologies affecting the vertebral column and spinal column
  • Have a basic understanding of CT in veterinary medicine

Lectures from the in-person offering will be captured and offered on demand, after the live course. In person registrations include access to the on demand recordings.

RACE Application Status
On Demand course participation: This program has been approved for  12.25 hours of Anytime, Non-Interactive-distance continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE-approval.

Participants will be responsible for ensuring they do not claim dual credit for the same session presented in person and available on demand. Participants should be aware that some state boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education. Please contact your state board directly with any questions.

This 5-day offering is the first installment of this 10-day module is designed to offer an intense, high-level review of clinical veterinary neurology aimed at the neurology resident.  Topics will range from neuroanatomy and neuropathology all the way through diagnostic imaging and surgical interventions.  This is a broad review of clinical neurology with the goal of preparing for the specialty examination and clinical practice.

By the end of this module you will:

  • Have an understanding of clinical functional neuroanatomy
  • Have a basic overview of diagnostic imaging modalities for neurological disorders
  • Have a basic understanding of diagnostic testing for neuromuscular disorders
  • Have a basic understanding of common large animal neurologic disorders
  • Have been presented with a high-level review of common neurologic syndromes in small animals
